Education of our children and young people has a multi-generational impact, with school leavers able to have freedom of choice in their future.
St Margaret Life’s Hope Foundation have a long-term commitment to subsidising tuition fees across the county.
On top of this, we provide the funds to secure teachers in the county and aim to provide sustainability and stability to the education system. The current ration of teacher to student is 1:100 with the average teacher salary being £30 a month.
Having children in the classroom is one thing, but having the tools to make the most of their education is another. Our foundation also provides funds for stationary, exercise books, school uniforms and other teaching resources.
We have a long-term dream of building our own school! We have the materials ready, the next stage is to raise funds to employ labourers to construct the buildings.
Due to the chronic shortage of adequate healthcare facilities and services in the region, there are a significant number of people in our care who have physical and learning disabilities.
This is often the result of poor/inadequate maternity care causing antenatal and intrapartum injuries to the mother and child, or the result of road traffic accidents.
We also have an ageing population with an increasing number of people experiencing dementia, stroke, cardiac illness etc.
St Margaret Life’s Hope Foundation is committed to the provision of physical aids such as wheelchairs, crutches and appropriate bedding to those with physical disabilities.
We also provide access to healthcare at the regional hospitals with funding for investigations, treatments, surgery, and long-term medications.
Our long-term goal is to employ a local district nurse who will be based in our school and can provide a simple, yet effective healthcare service outside of the large district hospitals.
Food is a basic human need.
This long-term project aims to provide environmentally and economically sustainable nutrition to the children and young people of Lamu County.
These provisions are distributed and overseen by our social worker across the county in public areas, and in the schools.
With the cost of grains increasing worldwide, the current costs are in excess of £400 per month.
Gender inequality is a key factor in our children being able to complete their education.
Girls will be absent from school without access to menstrual products resulting in them missing up to 25% of their schooling.
Social exclusion and loss of independence is also a significant factor in their overall wellbeing.
We are committed to providing reusable and sustainable menstrual products to all of our young people in the county.
A pack of washable menstrual products costs £5 per person and will last at least one year.
We work with Afripads on this initiative. Afripads is a non-profit organisation based in Africa, who employ local women to make the menstrual products, meaning the £5 cost is reinvested in another community benefitting women across Africa.
Natural family planning is essential to reduce the maternal and newborn death rate, which in Kenya, is among the highest in the world.
Our social worker has received training on reproductive health and will be taking this teaching out across our communities so that families are empowered using a simple but innovative product.
Menstrual beads are a way of a woman tracking her menstrual cycle and understanding her fertile window so she can effectively plan her family with safe child spacing.
Each pack costs £1.50 but can save two lives.
Your support and contributions will enable us to meet our goals and improve conditions. Your generous donation will fund our mission.
